Flashover in production. Getting buildy on the set of Flashover opening in a week.

Words like 'monumental' and 'immersive' get thrown

Words like 'monumental' and 'immersive' get thrown around a lot these days but for Flashover the project is so all encompassing we had to build a labyrinthine space to house it all (along with a walk-thru 3D model of course!).

Flashover is more than just one work. It's a suite of seven pieces conceived to work in unison (or in smaller combos and as standalone works). Each has their own dedicated environment that leads into the next and back again.

All of which has been made real by our amazingly talented, problem-solving, creative Environment Designer Kris Bird @krisbird

This first short season is a monumental proof-of-concept before we take it out into the world in all its forms.

We're all very proud of this work and hope it can affect some kind of change in its own way.

Last week Flashover was all systems go when we brought our September experiments back into the studio to work with some of our wonderful feature collaborators.

We are lucky enough to have the talented and generous artist, 3D animator and researcher Gina Moore working with us on spatialising a kangaroo, the main Macropod of the piece. It was such a joy to spend some serious dev time with Gina in the LED Volume Studio at UoM.

Artists have long created work inspired by nature – in the face of climate change, how do artists working with nature stay resilient to help inspire change and what are the steps we can take to support artists to effect change?

Please join us for this discussion led by the curious mind of Trish Hansen and artists Louise Flaherty, Lara Tilbrook, and CJ Taylor whose environmental work features in Assembly: Unveiling the City of Adelaide’s Contemporary Art Collection, on display at the Adelaide Town Hall.

Louise Flaherty is an artist informed by quiet reflection on the natural environment focusing on research into SA flora, her current practice spans drawing and installation with a focus on collaborative community driven projects.

Lara Tilbrook works to Care for Country on the ancient homelands of the Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Narungga Nations on Karta Pintingga (Kangaroo Island). Her practice is fundamentally grounded in environmentalism with deep listening and change making at its core. Tilbrook’s hand-crafted body adornments, sculpture and installations are composed of materials close at hand, functioning as important records of biodiversity.

CJ Taylor engages with the concept of elastic photography in the Age of Extinction, the bushland where he lives on Peramangk country in southern Australia intimately shapes his practice.

Trish Hansen is the founder of ReWonder which acknowledges the crucial role of the arts in contributing to regenerative futures, where people flourish as beings of nature on a thriving planet.

New work in progress: for the past 18 months I've

New work in progress: for the past 18 months I've been involved in a collaborative project with artist and director Robert Walton @re_walton on the development for a project entitled 'Flashover'.

A few months ago, after much gentle development of the concept, storyboarding, planning, travel between Vic and SA, talking to potential collaborators, partners and funders we finally achieved lift-off with the project receiving backing via the UoM LED Volume Fund. In July this year we began work in earnest.

Partnering with leading photographer and computer graphics artist Phil Wilkinson and with more collaborators to be announced as the project unfolds, 'Flashover' is proving to be the most ambitious and complex production I've ever been involved with. We are seeking to discover a new way of seeing the world through lyrical spatial mapping, sound and technology. And that as they say, is just for starters!

Envisaged by CJ Taylor and Robert Walton during the tempest of the inaugural Expand Lab in 2022, Flashover has developed into a major project that seeks to find a new visual language for piecing together the charred memories of collective trauma with the indifference of fire to find beauty even in the most terrifying places. Generously mentored by Leigh Robb @curatorscocktail at AGSA, Flashover attracted Arts South Australia @artssouthaus development funding for CJ in 2023 and in July of this year secured nearly $250,000 in a major competitive grant via the LED Volume Studio in the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne @vca_mcm, with funding support from the Commonwealth Department of Education, Skills and Employment.

Using innovative spatial mapping techniques to create a uniquely immersive experience the project has also engaged with NantStudios in Melbourne, the home of the largest LED volume screen in the world. Flashover is currently seeking national and international exhibition partners for 2025.
